Barton, D. & Tusting, K. ) (2005). Beyond communities of practice. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. This edited collection takes further the idea of “communities of practice” developed by Lave and Wenger. Suggestions for Educators 1. Divide the group into two: one group should take a view that schools for religious minorities should be financed by the state and the other should take a view against this. Then debate. 2. The group should discuss the extent to which their identities differ in different situations—for example, within the family, schools, and with peers.

Membership of these communities is rarely chosen lightly. The schools sometimes draw from families linked to several mosques and who are geographically widespread. In each of the schools some children travel many miles each day to get to the school. Both parents and children make sacrifices to be at the school and they do so because they wish to be part of a community of practice where there are shared assumptions about the nature of God, the world, and humanity. These schools teach the Koran as literally true and a guide for all of life.

The schools differed in the extent to which they allowed students to draw, paint, or sculpt images of people—some prohibiting it altogether while one primary school in The Netherlands had an extensive mural of children playing painted on the fencing all round its own playground. An unhappy compromise had been agreed in one English school whose year one and two classroom had a row of named drawings of the children drawn by themselves stuck to the windows. When I asked about them, it was pointed out to me that each drawing was of a person with a red scarf round its neck.
