As one student remarked, “On the college campus, there are so many different people coming together. Even though everyone is coming here from a different background—and they’re probably headed somewhere completely different than everyone else when they graduate, and they’re here to study different things—they’re still all here to get a degree and to have their undergraduate experience. ” For all its potential long-term benefits, the transition to college for many students can induce a state of disequilibrium or loss of synchrony that prompts them to reflect on issues of meaning and purpose, questions of character and identity, and their own perspectives on a potentially wide range of other issues that previously may not have been of any significant personal relevance.

In particular, engaging regularly in self-reflection shows a substantial positive effect on spiritual questing. 1 illustrates this effect by comparing students who seldom or never engage in selfreflection (once a month or less—the bottom line in the figure) with two other groups of students: those who engage in selfreflection on a daily basis (the top line in the figure), and those who do a moderate amount of self-reflection (one or more times per week, but not daily—the middle line in the figure).

In contrast, those who are high-scorers on Spiritual Quest are also more likely than their low-scoring peers to say they are “secure” in their religious beliefs (48% vs. 40%) and to report that they pray (39% vs. 15%) or meditate (10% vs. 1%) on a daily basis. These findings illustrate the variable, and sometimes complex, relationship between spiritual questing and religious conviction. Indeed, while religiosity may play a key role in the process by which individuals formulate responses to core questions of meaning and purpose, resolution of these concerns may result in deepening religiosity or, for some, perhaps, a rejection of it.
