If 1939 was a sort of Gold Rush year for comics publishing, it also marked the beginning of World War II in Europe, though the United States would not enter that conflict until the end of 1941. This event, of course, impacted every aspect of American culture, though the rise of the comic book continued virtually unabated through the war, largely because the format could easily be adapted to stories that supported the war effort.

Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson founds National Allied Publications (a forerunner of DC Comics). 1935 National Allied produces New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine. New Fun #1 is widely considered to be the first true American comic book featuring all-new material. The book would be retitled More Fun Comics in 1936 and run until 1947 under that title. New Fun #6 contains the first published work by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster (who would later create Superman), with stories featuring the swashbuckling hero Henri Duval and the supernatural crimefighter Doctor Occult.
