C) For the same reason a 2×4 analysis was carried out on the maternal responses to the individual statements within the skill area. Results First, we will deal briefly with the results which were found when the population scores were examined. It must be emphasized that the main justification for this stage of the analysis was to discover whether differences between the responses to the statements, as well as differences between the social class groups, were sufficiently large to justify carrying out a more sensitive analysis on the data.

This evidence strongly suggests that: (1) The middle-class mothers are more likely than working-class mothers to take up the child’s attempts to inter-act verbally with the mother in a range of contexts. (2) The middle-class mothers are less likely to avoid or evade answering difficult questions put to them by their children. (3) The middle-class mothers are less likely to use coercive methods of control. (4) The middle-class mothers are more likely to explain to the child why they want a change in his behaviour.

The score on this index gives some indication of the range and quality of the mother’s communications to the child. Verbal inter-action indices of this kind seem potentially capable of making relatively fine discriminations within a social class group, and of accounting for variations within the class concerned. This matter is still under investigation. Of some importance is the finding that there is a correlation between the mothers’ ranked choices in the ‘toy’ schedule and the intelligence of their children.
