For sampling it is important to note that gases and vapors stay airborne for long periods. An aerosol is a system consisting of airborne solid or liquid particles that is dispersed in a gas phase, usually the atmosphere. Aerosols are generated by fire, erosion, sublimation, condensation and abrasion of minerals, metallurgical materials, organic and other inorganic substances in construction, manufacturing, mining, agriculture, and transportation, among other operations. Aerosol classifications depend on the physical nature, particle size, and method of generation.

Examples of insoluble dusts are minerals, metal oxides, silica, granite, and asbestos.

Portable instruments may often be used for long periods with the charger plugged into line current to allow sampling periods longer than the battery life. Fixed instruments generally operate on line power. Recent advances in microchip and sensor technology have resulted in dramatic improvements in direct reading instruments.
