Comparison of Figures 6 and 9 clearly demonstrates a significant reduction in the maximum transport distance achievable with the assumed larger material particle size / increased dewatering velocity. The maximum transport distance for the larger particle size material is now in the region of 850m (compared to the initial case of approximately 1200m). In reality, greater transportation distances would normally be expected than those predicted by the model for both instances. The distances predicted have been limited due to the main channel of the River Thames having been modelled as being flat for simplicity.

The trials are expected to start shortly, led by British Waterways, but with support and involvement from Defra and the EA. The intention is that the results will be available in time for them to be taken into consideration when the NVZ Rules are reviewed in 2005.
